Understanding Mackinac County Releases
A Mackinac County release means the custodian stopped holding a person under a particular authority. It does not always mean the person walked into the community. Someone may leave the Mackinac County Jail after posting bond, completing a local sentence, receiving credit for time served, obtaining a dismissal, or beginning probation. Another person may leave the same building because staff transferred them to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. The county booking and release record identifies which event occurred.
The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office controls the jail’s physical checkout record. The District or Circuit Court record explains the legal act behind it. MI-VINE can report a near-current custody event from the participating jail. OTIS, the Michigan Department of Corrections search, applies only when a person entered state corrections jurisdiction. Each source answers a different part of the question, and none should be stretched beyond its scope.
- Release
- The end of custody by the named agency.
- Transfer
- A move from one custodian to another, not a community release.
- Discharge
- The end of MDOC jurisdiction, including supervision, when used in OTIS.
- Time served
- Custody credited or completed for the identified sentence.
Mackinac County Release Types
The release code matters more than disappearance from a roster. A person released on bond still has an open case. Someone listed as transferred remains confined by a new agency. Parole follows an MDOC prison term, while probation comes from a court and may follow jail or replace incarceration. The record must be read as a whole.
| Release type | Meaning | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Local jail custody ends under court conditions. | Jail release record and MiCOURT case |
| Time or sentence served | The identified custodial term was credited or completed. | Jail computation and judgment |
| Probation | A court orders community supervision. | Court judgment and assigned supervision record |
| Parole | MDOC permits conditional community release from prison. | OTIS and Parole Board record |
| Dismissal or acquittal | The identified case no longer authorizes detention. | Court register of actions |
| Transfer | Another jail, MDOC, USMS, or ICE takes custody. | The receiving agency’s system |
Does a missing jail entry prove release? No. A transfer, data delay, treatment move, or other custody event can also remove a person from a current view. Ask for the actual release type and destination.
Mackinac County Release Record Fields
A focused request should identify the existing booking jacket, jail management-system booking and release summary, release authorization, and booking photograph. Mackinac County need not create a new report or answer open-ended questions. Asking for named documents and fields gives the FOIA coordinator a clear search target and separates the jail’s action from the court’s authority.
| Field to request | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Booked name and booking number | Connects the release to the correct jail event. |
| Admission date and time | Marks when local custody began. |
| Committing agency and case | Links the jail record to its authority. |
| Charges, bond, and holds | Shows conditions recorded during the booking. |
| Actual release date and time | Documents when jail checkout was completed. |
| Release code or disposition | Distinguishes bond, sentence end, transfer, and other outcomes. |
| Destination or receiving agency | Shows whether another custodian took the person. |
| Booking photograph | Provides the image if it exists and is disclosable. |
A court order may be signed before staff verify holds, return property, and finish checkout. For that reason, the court timestamp and physical release timestamp may differ. The release summary is the better source for the latter.
Note: Ask for reasonably segregable nonexempt material if part of the Mackinac County release record must be redacted.
Request Mackinac County Release Records
Michigan FOIA is the formal route when no online Mackinac County release record exists. The County Clerk serves as FOIA Coordinator. A special form is not required, and a request may be sent as a letter, email, fax, or county form. It should seek existing documents, not a custom inmate history.
- Identify the person by full name, booking date range, and date of birth only when needed to distinguish the record.
- Request the booking and release summary, release authorization or disposition, actual release time, destination, and booking photograph if maintained.
- Ask for electronic copies and state that the request seeks existing records rather than a new compilation.
- Send the request to the Mackinac County Clerk and FOIA Coordinator, with “FOIA” clear in the subject line.
- Review the response for the cited exemption, segregable material, and appeal instructions if any part is denied.

The county must issue a statutory response within five business days. It may grant, deny, partly grant, give one extension notice of up to ten additional business days, or point to a freely available online record. That deadline governs the response, not a promise that all documents arrive within five days.
Mackinac County Release Record Law
Michigan FOIA, 1976 PA 442, begins with access to writings used or held by a public body in an official function, subject to exemptions. MCL 15.232 defines key terms, MCL 15.233 addresses inspection and copying, MCL 15.234 covers fees, MCL 15.235 governs responses, and MCL 15.243 lists exemptions. The Sheriff and county are public bodies. Court records follow judicial access rules instead.
Permitted charges can include itemized labor, duplication, media, paper, and mailing. If an estimate exceeds $50, the county may seek a good-faith deposit of no more than half under the stated rules. A qualifying indigent requester may receive a $20 discount with the required affidavit and subject to limits. Inspection during business hours is another option.
Mackinac Release Records at Marley
Mackinac County is unusual because the Sheriff, jail, County Clerk, District Court, and Circuit Court are tied to the Marley Street government complex in St. Ignace. Their close location does not merge their records. The Mackinac County Jail documents physical checkout. The District or Circuit Court explains bond, dismissal, sentence, probation, or another legal event. The Clerk coordinates county FOIA and holds Circuit Court records.
A broad request for an “inmate history” can fail because no single office owns that product. Ask the Sheriff for booking and release records. Ask the correct court for the register of actions, judgment, commitment, or release order. Use the Mackinac County Clerk for a certified Circuit record and for county FOIA routing. This split prevents a court authorization from being mistaken for the exact hour the jail completed release.
The MiCOURT Case Search provides the online starting point for the legal record. The captured Mackinac court-selection screen shows why choosing the right court and matching the case number matter.
The docket may explain why custody ended, but the Sheriff release record confirms when checkout occurred.
Note: Send each Mackinac office a record-specific request because the jail, Clerk, and courts remain separate custodians.
Fees After Mackinac County Release
The official Sheriff and jail pages link separate payment channels for booking fees and jail housing. Their existence supports one narrow point: physical release and an administrative balance are separate facts. The public source does not publish a universal dollar amount or collection timetable, so no fixed charge should be inferred.
A payment link is not a custody-status tool. Confirm Mackinac County release through the jail record, MI-VINE event, and court authority. Questions about an individual balance belong with the office named on the statement or payment page. A cleared balance does not prove release, and a remaining balance does not prove the person is still confined.
Property After Mackinac County Release
The jail page says unapproved mailed items are placed in inmate property, but it does not publish a release-property pickup timetable or exit point. Call the Mackinac County Jail at (906) 643-7325 with the booking identity before traveling or sending a representative. Staff can explain the current process and any authorization needed.
Record corrections also stay with the office that controls the record. The Sheriff handles a booking or release error. The court clerk controls docket and judgment records. MDOC controls OTIS. A correction in one system does not automatically update the others, so send the supporting document to each relevant custodian.
Note: Mackinac County publishes no general property-release schedule, so direct jail confirmation should precede an in-person trip.
Mackinac Release Records and Set-Asides
Michigan’s Clean Slate and set-aside process can change public access to a conviction record. The local court that entered the judgment remains the place to confirm current public status. MiCOURT exclusions and time filters mean that an online miss is not proof that a record was expunged or set aside.
Michigan expungement assistance is the state starting point. MCL 780.621 and related sections govern eligibility, waiting periods, excluded offenses, and automatic processing. If a Mackinac County case becomes nonpublic, stale photo or record links should be reviewed without trying to reconstruct restricted details from copies elsewhere. The jail custodian decides any separate FOIA question about a booking photo or log under current law.
Note: A missing MiCOURT result does not prove a Mackinac County case was set aside, sealed, or erased.
Find Mackinac County Released Inmates
Begin with the last known custodian. A person held only in the Mackinac County Jail belongs in the Sheriff, MI-VINE, and court path. A person sentenced to state prison belongs in OTIS and MDOC records. Federal and immigration events use separate systems. Absence from any one database is never enough.
- Call the Mackinac County Jail at (906) 643-7325 and ask whether the named person is held, released, or transferred.
- Search MI-VINE by exact name, then confirm the participating agency and custody event rather than relying on a name alone.
- Choose the proper Mackinac court in MiCOURT and compare bond, disposition, sentence, dismissal, probation, or remand entries.
- Request the Sheriff booking and release summary for durable county proof.
- Use OTIS only if the person entered MDOC jurisdiction and read status, dates, location, and supervision together.
- Use BOP for a federal sentence or ICE ODLS for a recent immigration-custody event.
For a recent local event, the jail and MI-VINE are the fastest pair. For an older Mackinac County release, the court file and Sheriff record are more durable. OTIS generally keeps discharged offenders visible for three years after discharge, but it does not cover every county-jail booking.
MDOC Search for Mackinac Releases
The Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS search is the bridge when a Mackinac County case led to state prison. Search by MDOC number when known. With a name search, compare the spelling, aliases, descriptors, offense, sentencing county, and MDOC number before opening the detail record.
| OTIS field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| MDOC number | Best unique search key for state corrections records |
| Name and aliases | Starting point that must be matched to other identifiers |
| Current status | Distinguishes prisoner, parolee, probationer, and discharged |
| Location or office | Shows an institution or supervision assignment |
| Earliest Release Date | Parole eligibility point in applicable cases, not a promise |
| Maximum Discharge Date | Outside sentence or jurisdiction date as then calculated |
The official OTIS search capture shows the filters available for an MDOC record.
A state result does not replace the Mackinac County Jail record. It shows the later MDOC stage when that agency took jurisdiction.
Mackinac County Recent Release Gap
No verified official Mackinac County web page publishes a rolling 24-hour or 72-hour released-person list. The Sheriff and jail pages provide contact information, MI-VINE guidance, payments, and jail information, but the researched sources do not establish a public feed URL, fields, cadence, photographs, or retention window.
That absence does not mean the jail lacks an internal log. For one person, call the jail and seek the booking and release summary. For a date range, request existing release-log entries from precise start and end times. The county need not create a new 24-hour or three-day compilation if it does not maintain one. MI-VINE works best when registration occurs before a future event and should not be treated as a permanent archive.
Note: Mackinac County publishes no verified feed cadence, field set, photo coverage, or public retention window.
Mackinac County Release Supervision
Parole follows release from an MDOC prison term and continues state jurisdiction. Probation comes from a court and can follow county jail or replace incarceration. Bond conditions are pretrial terms, not automatic parole or probation. Search OTIS for MDOC status and the assigned office, then compare the judgment or Parole Board record.
Historic state material placed a Mackinac County parole and probation office at the courthouse, but assignments can change. The current office should be checked in MDOC’s live directory and on the person’s OTIS record. The full verification chain is covered on the Mackinac County parole and probation page.
Mackinac Release Alerts and Federal Records
Mackinac County’s jail page directly tells users to select Michigan in VINELink and enter the offender’s name. MI-VINE may report release, transfer, escape, or another custody change and can send phone, email, or text notifications as supported. It is a near-current service, not a certified or permanent record. Compare the reported agency and event to the Sheriff and court records.
The BOP locator applies only to federal Bureau of Prisons custody. A past date with no facility or a “RELEASED” result means the person is no longer in BOP custody, not that all state, immigration, or supervision obligations ended. ICE ODLS covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. A Mackinac jail entry stating “released to ICE” is a transfer, and the later ICE event must be checked separately.
Note: Every federal or immigration release result describes the named custodian only, not all possible custody or supervision.
Mackinac Custody or Community Release
The search system should match both the person and the agency. A current-custody tool answers a different question from a durable release record.
| System | Still confined | After release |
|---|---|---|
| Mackinac County Jail | Jail phone and MI-VINE agency status | Sheriff release record plus court authority |
| MDOC | OTIS prisoner status and institution | Parolee or discharged status, MDOC order, court sentence |
| Federal BOP | BOP locator facility | Released result and federal record |
| ICE | ODLS custody response | Recent released response within the stated scope |
| MiCOURT | May explain remand or commitment | Shows legal disposition, not physical checkout time |
Which source lasts the longest? For a Mackinac County jail event, the Sheriff record and court file are the durable pair. VINE is for status and alerts, while an OTIS public display ends after its stated retention window.
Mackinac Releases Beyond the County
Mackinac’s county offices are geographically close, but the legal record chain can cross Michigan or federal systems. A Mackinac conviction can send a person to any MDOC facility assigned through the state classification process. No operational MDOC prison, federal prison, or ICE detention center was identified in Mackinac County, so the sentencing county does not identify the person’s later physical location.
Follow the release code. A true community release stays with the Sheriff record, MI-VINE event, and court case. An MDOC transfer moves the search to OTIS. Federal custody moves to BOP or the federal docket, while immigration custody moves to ICE ODLS. The term “released” always refers to the named custodian.
Mackinac County Release Facility
The Facility Map identifies one local detention facility: Mackinac County Jail, operated by the Sheriff’s Office at the St. Ignace government complex. A bond, court-ordered, time-served, or sentence-end release normally returns a person to the community unless another authority takes custody. A transfer is followed in the receiving system.
The jail line is the immediate channel for a named custody question. The county FOIA path supplies a reproducible release document. MI-VINE can add a timely event notice, and the court file supplies the legal basis. No extra facility page is warranted merely because a Mackinac County case can lead to a prison elsewhere.
Note: Mackinac County research identified no separate city jail, state prison, federal prison, or ICE detention center within the county.
